What is Movie News After Dark? It’s a nightly column that serves at the pleasure of the internet’s biggest film nerds. Currently those nerds are waiting with baited breath for the release of The Avengers. So why wouldn’t we turn a big, shiny lens toward Joss Whedon’s summer kick-off event film? Okay, lets do that…
Now that The Avengers has already earned $260.5M overseas, it’s time for it to take over Movie News After Dark. As if it hasn’t been creeping its way in already. Tonight’s edition of the beloved movie news round-up column isn’t 100% populated by Avengers news, but it’s close enough. And it’s only Wednesday. We begin above with a shot from the film in question, featuring Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Captain America (Chris Evans) in the midst of battle. Needless to say, this all has me yearning to see the film again. It’s quite fun.
GQ has an excellent interview with Avengers director Joss Whedon, in which he talks about how The Geek Shall Inherit the Earth. He talks about other things, as well, including some work he did on a Batman franchise that never was — but could have been somewhere in between Joel Shumacher and Chris Nolan.
The Alamo Drafthouse has teamed up with Martin Scorsese’s Film Foundation for a screening series (complete with Mondo posters) that is going to absolutely rock. 35mm prints will be shown of the likes of King Kong, The Night of the Hunter, The Old Dark House, Stanley Kubrick’s Paths of Glory, Rashomon, Alfred Hitchcock’s Shadow of a Doubt, The Unholy Three and Film. Who wants to move to Austin?
Underwire explores Why Hulk Rips Up Audiences in The Avengers. Because Hulk is awesome. That’s why. (It should be noted that their reasoning is far more fleshed out and fun to read.)
HuffPo’s Mike Ryan tracks down Stephen Morahan, a man who worked on 2012′s The Avengers and 1998′s The Avengers, two movies that otherwise have nothing to do with each other. Well, except for the fact that the costumes of Uma Thurman and Scarlett Johansson are deliciously similar.
It cost HBO $35 million to cancel Luck. They should’ve just kept it going.
The folks at MTV’s NextMovie have released a set of posters that envisions summer 2012′s biggest movies as indie films, complete with laureled logos of various film festivals. My personal favorite is the one for Battleship, seen below. But I’d also be doing a disservice to the theme of tonight’s entry if I didn’t also throw in The Avengers. Consider it a two-for-one sale:
Vulture talks to Avengers star (and all-around Marvel show-stealer) Clark Gregg about becoming a comic book character and some of this hilarity that happened as Joss Whedon and crew were building summer 2012′s opening salvo.
Cinema Blend’s Katey Rich went all the way to Instanbul and learned at least 10 things about Skyfall. This is the best written of all the Skyfall set reports. Everyone else was flown all the way to the other side of the world on Sony’s dime to come back and bore us with press release-level jargon. I know, I read all of them.
Roger Ebert reviews The Avengers, gets most of his facts right and gives it 3/4 stars. He also inserted (pun intended) this little gem: “it’s time for desperately needed movies to re-educate nerds in the joys of sex. “The Avengers” is done well by Joss Whedon, with style and energy. It provides its fans with exactly what they desire.”
Movies.com’s resident comics nerd John Gholson has a great theory on how Joseph Gordon-Levitt figures into The Dark Knight Rises. It’s all guesswork at this point, based on a few trailers and a handful of lines of dialogue, but his reasoning is sound.

Earlier today, the wonderfully intelligent folks at Moviefone published a Girl’s Guide to The Avengers. They were swiftly held over the coals for talking down to girls who read comic books, as illustrated by The Discriminating Fangirl’s Pamela, who wrote a follow-up titled Moviefone’s Girl’s Guide to the Avengers – Now With More Stereotypes! What’s disappointing is that Moviefone wuss’d out and made a title change and an editor’s note based on all the flack. Like a bunch a bitches. (See what I did there?)
To redeem myself as a lover of all women, I would now like to point you to All Things Fangirl’s excellent Avengers contest. I would enter myself, but I believe myself to be ill-equipped. It’s okay though, I didn’t want to be on #TeamLoki anyway.
