What is Movie News After Dark? It’s your nightly gateway to all that is interesting, lively and sometimes sad about the world of entertainment. If it bumps in the night, we’re the ones laying down the beat.
We being this evening with the saddest story of the day. Yes, it’s May the Fourth (Star Wars Day) and the day many of you will finally realize the giddy kid dream that is Joss Whedon’s Avengers, but it’s also a day upon which the world of entertainment has lost a true pioneer. Adam “MCA” Yauch passed away today at age 47 following a long battle with cancer. You undoubtedly know him as 1/3rd of the Beastie Boys, but he’s also impacted the world of film, co-founding Oscilloscope Labs, the distributor of such films as We Need to Talk About Kevin and Bellflower. To read the best of those remembering him, I’d suggest you spend some time with AV Club’s Nathan Rabin’s obit. There’s also a story about Oscilloscope’s plans going forward in the wake of its co-founder’s passing. He will be missed, but more importantly, he will be remembered fondly as the multi-hyphenated pioneer that he was.
Screen Rant’s John Hanlon has 5 Reasons Why I’m More Excited for Dark Knight Rises Than The Avengers. Not one of which is “because a controversial opinion during the opening week of The Avengers will earn my article more readers.” That said, the reasons he does give are rather well explained.
Speaking of The Avengers and reasoning, the lovely Katey Rich at Cinema Blend presents 5 Reasons The Avengers Is the Best Marvel Movie Yet. Not the least of which is the dealing with the stakes raised in the film. This one actually does deliver some world-ending consequences.
Continuing on with Avengers talk, did you hear that it made $18.7 million at midnight shows last night? $14 of that was me. There is also this great feature from Inside Line about Tony Stark’s new Acura NSX Roadster, which makes a short, but sexy appearance in the film. The man has taste.
One final thing about The Avengers, I promise: Over at Badass Digest, Devin Faraci explains who the hell that guy at the end of The Avengers was. Naturally, there are some spoilers in here, so don’t read that unless you’ve seen the movie. As a relative novice to the deep world of Marvel Comics characters, I had no idea who it was. Faraci’s article is illuminating.
This poster for A Fantastic Fear of Everything starring Simon Pegg is a winner:
Alright, I lied. One more Avengers thing. Critic Greg Vellante writes about his experience seeing The Avengers poorly projected. It ruins it, you know. This article should also come with a warning, as it directly describes one of the film’s coolest moments. If you haven’t seen the film, you may want to bookmark that for later.
Toy Story 3 and Little miss Sunshine writer Michael Arndt has been hired to rewrite Catching Fire, the sequel to The Hunger Games. He’s being brought in to polish up the work already done by Slumdog Millionaire scribe Simon Beaufoy.
/Film rounds up early buzz on Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity. In short, it’s a bunch of unfinished opinions of an unfinished movie, so it’s mostly meaningless. That said, words like “visually ambitious” and Alfonso Cuaron being smashed together is never a bad thing.
Josh Brolin is talking about Oldboy. He explained at this past week’s Men in Black III press conference that he sought out Park Chan-wook’s approval for the project, that there will be a hammer fight and that Elizabeth Olsen and Sharlto Copley are in it to win it. This might actually work, you guys.
As I mentioned above, today is May the Fourth, an unofficial geek holiday known as Star Wars Day. “May the Fourth be with you,” get it? Anyway, plenty of blogs were out celebrating the day. Geeks of Doom presented the 30 Most Memorable Star Wars Quotes. Somehow “I am your father” didn’t make the list. The mind reels. Also, the Nerdist kids have unleashed a sexy Jedi bubblebath. It involves Chewbacca, a pair of sexy groomers and a lightsaber battle. This feels like a perfect place to end the week, does it not?
