If you’ve seen any of the other trailers for Sacha Baron Cohen’s upcoming comedy, The Dictator, then you already know what it’s all about. It mocks the absurdity of modern dictatorships, the ignorance of American jingoism, the douchiness of New York hipsters – and somehow it seems like it’s still going to tell a riches to rags story of personal growth and redemption.
But to really get an idea of how far Cohen is going to be willing to go with his comedy, you have to take a look at the film’s newest red band trailer…
While the new trailer repeats a lot of the same scenes that have been put in the film’s previous advertising, the red band version sees a few changed to be more offensive, and it gives us a glimpse of a couple completely new cases of Cohen rubbing your nose in his bad taste. There are jokes made at the expense of women, people riff on the tragic day of September 11th, and we get gross-out gags about ass-play during the miracle of childbirth. All in all, The Dictator looks like it’s going to be pretty disgusting.
But, at the same time, it looks like it’s going to have moments of disgusting hilarity. As long-in-the-tooth as Cohen’s schtick has started to get, his willingness to push even the most taboo of buttons is always good for at least one or two big belly laughs. You know…as long as you’re not one of those wimps who gets offended at things.
The Dictator opens on May 11th, so this trailer will likely be Paramount’s last opportunity to convince you to see the film. Shouldn’t you at least watch it and give them the chance?
