What is Movie News After Dark? It’s a nightly celebration of all that is good and right in the world. Mostly movie and television related stuff. A lot of love for Doctor Who and Game of Thrones, but also some things that you won’t see coming. Like Omar. Because Omar comin’, yo.
We begin tonight with a snipped version of the new Magic Mike poster. Since our last edition of News After Dark was headlined by a bikini-clad supermodel, here’s a little something for the equally undersexed female masses that read this column. Hello, all three of you. Welcome.
It’s important to take a moment this evening to congratulate Peter Sciretta at /Film on the 450th edition of Page 2, his ridiculously long running column cut from the same link-mongering cloth as the one you’re reading right now. The practice of the two columns may vary greatly, but they are spiritual brethren. To celebrate, I’ve promptly stolen several great items from within Page 2 and placed them below as part of tonight’s News After Dark round-up.
Slate has a round-up of What Not to Name Your Spaceship, including such doomed names as Icarus, Icarus II and Narcissus. In fact, we may need to add the almost assuredly bad trip of Prometheus to that list soon enough.
Also in space related things, Movies.com has entrusted Peter Hall with naming the Best Space Mission Movies of all-time, citing the likes of Sphere and Sunshine along with the great doc In the Shadow of the Moon. I was surprised to find that Mr. Hall didn’t somehow wedge Super Troopers into that list. Perhaps it was #13 on the list of 12.
Over at Hollywood.com, our own Brian Salisbury prepares the world for E3 at the Movies, talking up The Good and Bad of Video Game Adaptations. With the likes of Super Mario Brothers and Mortal Kombat among the contestants, it’s mostly bad.
Now that Game of Thrones, House, Fringe, Justified, Supernatural and a number of my favorite shows have ended for the year, it’s time to look forward to time spent with Walter White and the rest of the Breaking Bad crew. All hail the king, indeed…
Wired’s Geek Dad has a great think piece on How I Stopped Worrying and Learned to Love 3-D, just in time to prepare us to love the 3D employed in Ridley Scott’s Prometheus. It explains a great deal of the tech that is behind the astonishing visuals accomplished by the Alien director and his crew. It doesn’t explain the story problems, but it does explain the 3D.
AV Club has a rundown of 14-plus movies improved by director’s cuts. About 13 of which are Ridley Scott movies. Even though he’s already said that Prometheus is the final director’s cut, some of us that have seen it are already hoping that he’s lying.
Speaking of Prometheus, Damon Lindelof is talking Star Trek.
Christopher Nolan is also talking about things that don’t relate to the movie he’s about to put into theaters. Because who wouldn’t be excited about a Christopher Nolan directed James Bond movie?
Would you like to be a proper filmmaker? Do you know how to tell a story but lack the tools to do so? Uncrate has a solution for you in the form of their Essentials: Movie Maker kit. It’s only $31 thousand dollars or so, but it comes with an underwater camera kit. You’ll be editing Avatar 2 in no time.
One more thing before the video… This week’s Game of Thrones was watched by many people. This is good news, fellow nerds.
We close tonight with a Funny or Die original that is burning up the internetosphere today. By the time this publishes, we will likely be the last to praise the sheer comedic brilliance found in The Wire: The Musical, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t watch it again. It’s the perfect way to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of David Simon’s groundbreaking show. Unless, of course, you have enough time to go back and rewatch all five seasons of The Wire. In which case you should do both…
