What is Movie News After Dark? It’s a nightly column about movies and other interesting things currently being written by someone who is far more enthralled with Olympic gymnastics. He also watches beach volleyball, because why not?

We begin this evening’s somewhat slim edition of News After Dark with the first look at Toby Jones as Alfred Hitchcock and Sienna Miller as Tippi Hedren in The Girl, HBO’s look at the storied relationship between the director and his one-time muse.

1. Patton Oswalt’s open letters – The comedian writes letters to players on both sides of the entertainment industry. It’s both entertaining and enlightening, as is almost everything that comes from the direction of Mr. Oswalt.

2. Guillermo del Toro talks – The Pacific Rim director takes some time following his big Comic-Con appearance to talk to Collider’s Steve Weintraub about why he shot with the Red Epic, why he didn’t go 3D and why giant robots are frickin’ awesome. Okay, maybe he didn’t exactly say that last part. But it’s true.

3. The happenings in the world of streaming – /Film’s Angie Han brings together a plethora of news from the ever-evolving world of streaming media, including Amazon Instant’s debut on the iPad and Hulu’s debut on the Apple TV. I’ll play around with this after the Olympics and report back, I promise.

4. Epic Doctor Who – This first promo image from the upcoming seventh series of BBC’s Doctor Who is operating on a different level. Neither the Doctor (Matt Smith) or fan-favorite companion Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) appear to be in good shape at the hands (or antennae) of the series’ most prolific villains, the Daleks. Pure awesome.

5. Mondo Goonies - The folks at Mondo will put on sale this great Goonies print by Randy Ortiz. Follow @MondoNews tomorrow for the sale at a random time.

6. Jumanji remake gains steam – Matt Tomlach, one of the producers behind The Amazing Spider-Man, will set his eyes on rebooting and remaking Jumanji. Lets just concede that this doesn’t sound like a terrible idea.

7. Why Remakes Are One of Our Greatest Achievements as a Civilization – Speaking of remakes, io9′s Annalee Newitz takes a look at the sensation of remakes through the lens of traditional folklore, explaining how it’s been part of storytelling since way back in the day.

8. The Sound and Music of The Dark Knight Rises - Hans Zimmer and sound designer Richard King walk the folks at The Soundworks Collection through the building of the aural world of Christopher Nolan’s latest. Including but not limited to how they made Bane sound… well, exactly as Bane sounds.
