Donuts Bitch

What is Movie News After Dark? It’s a nightly movie news column that brings you only the best. Or the rest. At this point, it could go either way.

It’s important to start your day off right with a hearty breakfast. After a long night of binge drinking and carefully placing typos in this very column (I know you’re watching), I often wake up feeling pretty rough. So a good breakfast is huge in my world. What could be better than some Breaking Bad blue meth donuts? No one motivates like Heisenberg. Donuts, bitch.

1. The Ones Who Knock – Speaking of Breaking Bad, how about that last episode? Did you ever think that Walt Jr. would kill his aunt Marie? I knew that klepto-bitch had it coming. Anyway, that’s probably not a topic of discussion on this week’s crystal blue podcast with Joanna Robinson (swoon) and David Chen (also swoon). Why? Because that didn’t happen. Yet.

2. Tyler Perry is on fire – More specifically, his Atlanta studio is on fire. Or was on fire. Hopefully Madea’s family survived. That’s where he keeps them, right? (On a serious note, no one was hurt in the blaze.)

3. 230-million year-old bugs preserved in amber found! – Life is finding a way.

4. An Image of Tolerance Still Manages to Flicker in Old Movie Theaters – Your time would be well-spent on this essay over at the New York Times that profiles old movie theaters in Lebanon, where the word “escapism” takes on a completely different meaning.

5. Beverly Hills Cop TV Show – No Judge Reinhold, no deal. That’s all I’m saying. What, you got Shawn Ryan, creator of The Shield? I’m not impressed. No Judge, no budge.

6. Final Draft writer hits the iPad – Now you really have absolutely no excuse for writing the erotic science fiction movie that’s really just a metaphor for Reagan economics. Unless you drop your iPad and it breaks. That would be sad.

7. Handicapping the Animated Oscar Race – Apparently it’s time to start talking about Oscars again, so gird your loins. Up first is Bill Desowitz at IndieWire, talking about my own favorite category: Best Animated Feature. Look out for the dark horse, Hotel Transylvania. Or don’t, as that movie doesn’t stand a chance against the countless better films that have been released this year.

8. Writing for Tony Scott – Jeff Goldsmith gets to podcasting about Tony Scott, and he’s brought along a few names you’ll recognize. Quentin Tarantino and Richard Kelly. Impressive, and not just because of name recognition. It’s a hell of a Q&A session. Now if only we could get him to mature beyond having to use Blogger…

9. Mondo’s Batcave – The folks at Mondo have a new poster going on sale tomorrow. Artist JC Richard has done up an original piece called “The Batcave,” showing off a spirited look at what Batman’s lair might look like. The details are incredible. It goes on sale tomorrow at a random time.

10. The titles of David Fincher – Yesterday was David Fincher’s birthday. And if we planned it right, we had him saying “What’s in the box?!” sometime around lunch. Or he renewed his restraining order. Either way, here’s A Film Title Retrospective on Fincher’s films by the folks at Art of the Title.
