What is Movie News After Dark? It’s a nightly movie news column that stays up late, making it a prime candidate for movies at midnight.
Our evening begins with a shot from the upcoming season four premiere of Community (Oct. 19) that will include a parody of, you guessed it, The Hunger Games. It all centers around some lost student records and a competition to get into a class called “The History of Ice Cream.” I pre-enrolled, so I’m good.
1. Al Pacino as Joe Paterno – This is going to happen, according to Deadline State College. The movie is based on a book written before Jerry Sandusky’s child abuse scandal, focusing on the rise and reign of one of college football’s most iconic coaches. Though to be fair, they’d be missing an opportunity if they didn’t address the scandal a little bit.
2. Why Rebel Wilson is the most interesting woman in Hollywood – Jen Yamato goes beyond the fact that Rebel Wilson is simply one funny dame. With roles in Bridesmaids, Bachelorette and the upcoming Pitch Perfect, she’s about to be all over your radar.
3. Fox goes digital pre-DVD – In short, Fox has decided that it may release movies on digital platforms up to three weeks before they hit DVD and Blu-ray, the first studio to take such a leap. They will test this with a Sept. 18 release of Prometheus on digital platforms like Amazon, Google Play and iTunes prior to its October 11 release on disc and VOD. Here’s to the future!
4. Roger Ebert documented – Roger Ebert’s memoir has been optioned for a documentary by Hoop Dreams‘ Steve James, Steve Zaillian and exec. producer Martin Scorsese. This according to Roger Ebert. Seems pretty legit.
5. Go. Watch. It. – There’s a new app out there for iOS devices that allows you to take a picture of a movie poster, then find out how and where to stream said movie. Which works out great for those of you with large collections of studio-released movie posters just lying around your house.
6. Waiting for The Master – Deadspin’s Tim Grierson has a solid essay about the Oscar hopes of The Master and the journey of director Paul Thomas Anderson. For a website about sports writing about movies, it’s more than impressive.
7. Looper travels back in time and invents sex! – In the realm of other mainstream sites writing about movies even though they don’t traditionally know anything about movies, The Verge (a personal favorite tech site) gets on the hyperbole stallion and rides it like there’s no tomorrow. Because tomorrow is yesterday when you can jump through time.
8. Mondo Gallery Next – The folks at Mondo have unveiled what will be their next gallery show, a celebration of work by Robert Brandenburg and Craig Drake. It will run from September 14 through October 6, right through Fantastic Fest, for those nerds traveling into town.
9. The Star Trek Google Doodle – To celebrate the 46th anniversary of Star Trek, Google had a very special interactive doodle on their homepage today. if you missed it by chance, here’s a video of how it went, sadly without the iconic Trek sound effects. Tribbles!
10. TIFF Midnight Madness – The folks at The Substream give us an inside look at what’s happening on the streets of Toronto as the Toronto International Film Festival kicks off its Midnight Madness program, talking to folks about Dredd 3D.
