They said it couldn’t be done. A fifth year of 31 Days of Horror? 31 more terror, gore and shower scene-filled movies worth highlighting? But Rejects always say die and never back away from a challenge, so we’ve rounded up the horror fans among us and put together another month’s worth of genre fun. Enjoy!
Synopsis
Dick and Gina, two newlyweds driving across the desert on their honeymoon, find themselves embroiled in a mystery of Twilight Zonian proportions when they come across a severely injured stranger on the dark country road. Who is the man? What does he want? And more importantly, when things go sour, what do they do now?
Killer Scene
While the movie has a few good action scenes, namely a pretty bad ass car chase and a decent fight, the absolute best scene in the movie has nothing to do with scares or violence, but rather sex. Or, more accurately masturbation. While the two new lovers travel on the darkened road, Gina teases Dick with an ice cube in one of the steamiest non-nude sex scenes I’ve ever enjoyed.
Kill Sheet
Sex
Without any actual nudity, I’m being a bit generous with this rating based solely on that sexy scene above. We do see a fair bit of Lauren German, but nothing graphic. It’s just that her sexy ice cube scene got me all riled up, so I found this movie to be briefly very sexy.
Violence
With a few beatings, a car accident, and massively bloodied dude, the violence and gore isn’t quite enough to satisfy your blood lust, but the make-up effects that are there are sufficiently awesome.
Scares
There are a couple of jump scares and some awesomely gory make-up, but the film gets you in the Halloween mood by just having a generally creepy vibe overall. Not frightening, but tense in a Twilight Zone kind of way.
Final Thoughts
Tom Jane‘s feature directorial debut is not for everyone. It’s not even all that great, but I’ll admit to having really dug on it in 3D in a real movie theater. There is a cool comic book look to it with exaggerated night skies digitally laid in over the picture. Rather than just seeing some stars, we see an entire solar systems. I could dig it. And as a fan of anything The Twilight Zone, I vibed with where this film was coming from. It’s a short, retro ride with a respectable twist. Dark Country doesn’t try to reinvent anything, or even improve it. It just aims to be a decent story and, thanks to great acting turns from Tom Jane, Lauren German, and Ron Perlman, the film mostly succeeds and creates a creepy good evening film.
