They said it couldn’t be done. A fifth year of 31 Days of Horror? 31 more terror, gore and shower scene-filled movies worth highlighting? But Rejects always say die and never back away from a challenge, so we’ve rounded up the horror fans among us and put together another month’s worth of genre fun. Enjoy!
Synopsis
In the live action short film that inspired the full-length stop-motion film in 2012, young Victor Frankenstein turns to the powers of science and electricity to bring his dog Sparky back to life. After his experiment is a success, the young boy must try to hide the cute, misunderstood monstrosity from an easily frightened neighborhood.
Killer Scene
When his reintroduction to society goes awry, a frightened Frankenweenie takes off for the safety and solitude of the abandoned miniature golf course. Victor takes off in pursuit, only moments ahead of the angry mob intent on destroying the dog. In an ode to classic monster films, Sparky takes refuge in an abandoned windmill obstacle, but the neighbor’s bumbling attempts to capture the dog result in a fire that endangers both boy and dog.

What are you, some sort of pervert? Nothing like that here! It’s a kids movie, damn it!

Man if you thought this was a kids movie, you’re wrong. Sparky is hit by a car, off-screen, and is put back together with a ton of stitches. No one is really ever hurt, but there is some danger to boy and dog in the climactic final scene.

Frankenweenie takes its inspiration from the old monster movies of yore. While it does have a certain atmosphere about it, nothing in the film is outright scary, though if you’re an animal lover you will find yourself on edge (and on the verge of tears) several times in the short film.
Final Thoughts
I’ve long had a fondness for Frankenweenie but even I was surprised at just how similar the recent stop-motion feature was to the short. Basically every single scene is represented there and pretty accurately. The newest film, which you should definitely see, adds more depth to the world and throws in a ton more classic monster references, but the short is still worth a watch. Halloween time isn’t always about scares, boobs, blood, and more boobs and boobs with blood on them. It’s about a feeling. It’s about that change in the seasons, that creeping darkness, that chilled air. Frankenweenie is good family fun that sits a bit further into darkness than some children may be comfortable with, but ultimately it’s a great story about a boy and his dog and the lengths they’ll go for each other. While it isn’t scary, violent, or boner inducing, it does make you feel good to watch it and you’ll have some laughs and feel right at home in the season.
