What is Casting Couch? Today it’s a casting column that’s relying on the dreaded “short list” for content.

You can’t really say that The Switch is a Jackie Brown prequel. Its story doesn’t really connect with the goings-on of Jackie Brown in any way, and Quentin Tarantino isn’t involved or anything. But it is an adaptation of an Elmore Leonard novel that features many of the same characters Jackie Brown did. Case in point: Variety reports that fiery redhead Isla Fisher is in negotiations to play Melanie, the same stoner surfer girl that Bridget Fonda played in Tarantino’s film. The Switch also features Mos Def and John Hawkes in the roles Samuel L. Jackson and Robert De Niro originally played, and Jennifer Aniston as a kidnapped housewife. Fisher’s character is said to be the manipulator of the story, and isn’t that always the case with these pretty girls?

Despite originally claiming that he wasn’t going to make Transformers 4, Michael Bay is currently gearing up to put Transformers 4 into production. And seeing as this is being viewed as a relaunch for the franchise that will feature all-new human characters, the search is on for the new Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox. Apparently the film is going to feature a dude played by Mark Wahlberg, the dude’s daughter, and the dude’s daughter’s racecar-driving boyfriend. According to a report from THR, the girls being screen tested for the daughter role include Abbie Cornish’s sister Isabelle Cornish, The Last Airbender actress Nicola Peltz, Andie MacDowell’s actress daughter Margaret Qualley, and Gabriella Wilde, who’s a member of the cast of the Carrie remake. For the racecar driver, they’re looking at Taken 2 actor Luke Grimes; the star of Fox’s Terra Nova, Landon Liboiron; Blue Lagoon: The Awakening star Brenton Thwaites; and Weeds actor Hunter Parrish. A credit has been put next to everyone’s name because it’s presumed that nobody knows who these kids are.

And speaking of kids that nobody has ever heard of…that same report from THR has news that similar screen tests are also being done so that Marc Webb’s Amazing Spider-Man sequel can fill the role of Peter Parker’s rich boy best friend, Harry Osborne. They’re calling the Osborn character “dark and edgy,” so in order add appropriate grittiness, they’re currently auditioning bad boys such as Melancholia actor Brady Corbet, Chronicle’s Dane DeHaan, and Beautiful Creatures’ star Alden Ehrenreich. If one of these kids does manage to land the Osborn role, that will put them one step closer to that crucial milestone where you can mention their name without adding a movie they were in right next to it. That’s when you know you’ve got real star power.

Before we get to news regarding someone with real star power, though, let’s stick with the up-and-comers for a minute. It seems like Hollywood cast all their big names in things yesterday, and today they were bringing in the fresh faces. THR is reporting that Big Love actor Douglas Smith has signed on to star in a film called Hard Drive. This is an indie drama based on a Hal Niedzviecki novel called “Ditch,” that’s said to be about a boy getting thrust into adulthood in the digital age. It’s hard to say what that means. Maybe it has something to do with Internet porn? Megan Follows, who’s actually got a little bit of seasoning, has also been added to the cast, which is said to include Shameless actress Laura Wiggins and jazz drummer Jerry Granelli.

Nick Cannon is still a pretty young dude, but chances are you know who he is, so rejoice in a report where I don’t have to list everyone’s credits. Recently he told Parade that he’ll play a small role in Drumline 2, a film that he will also be a producer on, and that is meant to eventually spawn a TV show on VH1. Cannon explained that his character from the first film would be returning in what amounts to a small cameo, because the focus of this new film will be on a new class of young people looking to get their marching and drumming on. Ugh…there’s that word again, “young.” It’s probably only a matter of time before we get a short list of actors being looked at for Drumline 2 characters.

Finally, let’s change things up by ending with a report on one of the most important actors currently working in Hollywood: Michael Fassbender. Seeing as he’s one of the most skilled, engaging, and handsome stars working today, any time you get to see Fassbender up on the big screen, you know you’re in for a treat. But, say you’re not being given the opportunity to see him, then getting to hear his voice is still better than nothing, right? Hopefully, because Deadline reports that he’s just signed on to narrate a documentary about Formula One racing called 1. The film is set to include appearances from Formula One champions like Sir Jackie Stewart, Mario Andretti, Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher and Damon Hill, who are apparently all real racers and all people that Fassbender is a really big fan of. European people and their racing, jeez. I guess this stuff is at least less boring than NASCAR.
