If you saw a story floating around online about Mike Myers finishing a first draft for the Wayne’s World 3 script, and your bullshit detector lit up, you were right. That bullshit detector was a great investment.
The story came from an email sent around to several movie website writers, but it cited Entertainment Weekly without providing a specific story (because, you know, there wasn’t one). Luckily, Ethan Anderton at First Showing followed the rabbit hole a bit, checked with EW writer Laura Hertzfeld, and discovered that she had no knowledge of the story that was being tied to her name.
Dana Carvey announced the project back in March, but the funny thing is that even if this new story were true (and if Wayne and Garth really were going to cope with the likes of YouTube and Auto-tune in the proposed plot), it’s still a million miles away from a greenlight. To date, there’s been no indication that Paramount is interested in a decades-later sequel. I’ve contacted Myers’ publicist for a definite response on the matter, but haven’t received one as of yet. We’ll keep on top of it because judging solely on the response to some of the posts out there, people are actually really excited about this happening.
