Bong Joon-ho did something incredible with The Host. He revitalized the creature feature, made a name for himself that he’s been able to capitalize on and ensured that there would be an American remake of his film as well as a homegrown Korean sequel. Even though his name isn’t on The Host 2, the project from director Park Myeong-chan still has its own buzz simply because of how excellent the first film was.
According to Twitch, the sequel is finally going to get off the ground with a script from Im Pil-sung that involves not one, but two hideous beasts. They’re going to shoot for a Summer 2014 release.
Does The Host really need another entry? Probably as much as Jaws did (so look out for The Host 3D in 2016!), but if they come up with something as good as the original, it’ll mean another fantastic monster flick to enjoy, and if they make something terrible, it won’t be a big loss for audiences. How it will affect a slumping Korean movie industry is another question — one that Twitch wisely points out. I enjoyed My Way as much as anyone else, but apparently you can’t keep pumping in large amounts of money into tentpoles that don’t hold anything up. Or, worse, that drag everything down. Regardless, it should be at least a little bit of fun to watch people run screaming from two huge, vagina-looking terrors.
