It’s a nightly column that took some holiday time off, but it now back for its third (we think) season of rocking your world with links about entertainment, non-entertainment and other wordy pursuits in-between.
Downton? Damn Near Killed Her – As you should already know if you reside on the Internet, Downton Abbey is back for its third season here in the United States of America. And as has been the case in the past, we just can’t get enough of that elegant British melodrama. If we had to place bets on what really connects Downton with its hip young American audience, we’d say that it has something to do with Dame Maggie Smith. See the following video as exhibit A.
Django Uncut – The fine folks at Vulture explore what might be missing from Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, including what we can only hope is several more hours of movie. There’s also a good explanation, we’re told, for why QT’s cameo was so… Australian. Or New Zealander. Or one of those, dependent upon the moment.
BERENDAL! – The folks over at ScreenRant have assembled a list of known facts about Gareth Evans’ follow-up to The Raid: Redemption, a sequel known as Berendal. It’s the movie Evans originally wanted to make, but wasn’t able to due to a lack of funding. After going low budget and breaking out with The Raid, he’s ready to go for the big story. We’ll drink to his success!
He Doesn’t Do Top Tens – Our good friend Quint over at Ain’t It Cool News is not a man who writes Top Ten lists as other critics do. Instead, he just talks about his favorite movies of the year. It’s like a Top Ten, but more interesting.
10 Directors to Watch 2013 – Variety has released its annual list of directors to watch. Among them is the guy behind The Sapphires, and the guys who wrote The Hangover. The latter of which has turned into well… a movie that’s kind of like The Hangover.
iTunes vs. Blu-ray – When it comes to watching HD movies on your home system, you want the best quality image you can find. Otherwise why did you spend all that money in the first place, right? Ars Technica has an in-depth analysis of which is better: HD downloads from iTunes or the old classic, Blu-ray dual-layer BD-50 discs. The conclusions may surprise you.

The Color of Movies – Over on a project called Spotmaps, a team of science people has begun taking a look at the average color from each frame within a particular film and assembling it in order onto one image.
