Red 2: Plaid Boogaloo - This has been hanging around a while, but there is now a plaid-filled official first look at Red 2, the follow-up to the Bruce Willis, John Malkovich-led “old guy spies” movie based on a comic by Warren Ellis. The first was a fun pic, full of Helen Mirren in an evening gown shooting a 50-caliber machine gun. If the second has any of that, we’ll be in good shape.
3D is dead – This is the most striking headline from the early CES 2013 coverage over at The Verge. According to their report, gone is the home entertainment tech world’s commitment to wearing glasses, in are higher resolutions, curved displays and gorgeous OLED brightness. Is the 3D resurgence fading? At least in your living room, that might be the case.
Downton Riches – As we reported last night, the BBC’s Downton Abbey returned to PBS here in the U.S. this past weekend. A day later, we’ve got the numbers on the third season’s opening act and it would appear as if PBS is in fine shape, finding record numbers and a 96% viewership increase. We Americans just can’t get enough of that well-dressed melodrama. Somehow Branson is to blame.
Shadow of Colossus rewrite – Writer Seth Lochhead, whose credits include co-writing Joe Wright’s killer kid film Hanna, has been signed on to write a new draft of the video game adaptation Shadow of Colossus for Chronicle director Josh Trank. He’ll be improving on the work of Justin Marks, which shouldn’t be hard to do, considering Marks is the man behind such epics as Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.
Wolverine tales – Director James Mangold is out on the town talking about the story behind The Wolverine, which will find our hero a bit removed from the events of X-Men 3. Mangold also talks about his interest in showing Logan to be “a samurai without a master, without a purpose. Kind of a soldier who is cut loose.” Seriously, who can resist a good Ronin tale?
Brolin is Sinning – Dimension films has confirmed that Josh Brolin is in for Robert Rodriguez’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill For in the very important role of Dwight. In other news, they are actually making Sin City 2.
How to Cope with All Stages of Fan Letdown – io9′s Charlie Jane Anders walks us through the stages of grief with a few useful tips on dealing with the letdown that sometimes occurs in the world of major film properties. With summer movie season still a ways away and a few big ones getting new life this year — we’re looking at you, Superman — it might be worthwhile to talk about this stuff in advance.
Minimialist Dead – Take a gander at a few of these minimalist posters for The Walking Dead from DesignDifferent on Etsy. They’ve also got a few for other zombie properties. Fun.
