21 and Over didn’t really need the “From the Makers of The Hangover” tag. It’s sort of one big audio/visual “From the Makers of The Hangover” tag, but they spell it out in plain english anyway. Co-writer/directors Jon Lucas and Scott Moore have jumped back into the booze-filled deep end with a movie that gets so drunk it pulls a Weekend at Bernie‘s.
Keeping the plot light on its feet, the movie focuses on a smart kid (Justin Chon) celebrating his 21st birthday with his two best friends and a big medical exam looming on the horizon. Insanity ensues. Hopefully hilarity will too.
See if you can spot the running gag and watch the trailer for yourself. You might want to take some charcoal first:
21 and Over is in theaters March 1st, and it’s only slightly surprising that they didn’t call it Killing Jeff Chang.
This will be an interesting test for Lucas and Moore. It’s true that they co-wrote The Hangover, but if there were ever a film shaped largely by its improvising cast and creatively shrewd director, it was that. They also wrote The Change-Up, so it seems clear that they enjoy sticking to the comedy structure basics. This is their first outing with the director credit, too, and while this all looks pretty standard, here’s hoping they’ve given it a bit of heart.
On second thought, they also could have called it The Adventures of the Young Wolf Pack.
