The Sundance Film Festival may be over, but that doesn’t mean that the year’s first major film fest doesn’t live on in our hearts – or our theaters and VOD apparatus. Like any good film festival, Sundance is not just a fun movie-watching playtime, it’s also a market for new films looking for a distribution home, even films that come complete with big stars (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ashton Kutcher, Paul Rudd, the list goes on and on). But just because a film gets picked up at Sundance — and by a major company, to boot — doesn’t mean that it will get a big, fancy theatrical release in a timely fashion (see the Tobey Maguire- and Elizabeth Banks-starring The Details for proof of that), though it’s a damn good start.
So, just which of the many films that bowed at the ‘dance will you be able to see at a theater (or couch) near you? If our tally of purchased films is to be believed, at least thirty-eight! Winter 2013
The History of the Eagles
Part One will make its television debut on Friday, February 15, at 8PM on Showtime, with Part Two premiering the following night, Saturday, February 16, at 8PM.
Sound City
Gravitas Ventures will distribute the music doc worldwide via cable, satellite, telco, online, hotel, and airline VOD operators on February 1.
Spring 2013
Stoker
Fox Searchlight will release the Chan-wook Park joint on March 1.
jOBS
Open Road has long been set to release the Ashton Kutcher-starring Steve Jobs biopic on April 19.
Upstream Color
Shane Carruth will self-distribute his latest film, with a planned opening date in New York of April 5, with expansion in 20 markets to follow.
Summer 2013
Don Jon’s Addiction
Relativity Media picked up the film (for a pretty penny) and have already promised a full summer release. Good luck getting less than an NC-17 rating, guys.
I Used To Be Darker
Monterey Media is planning a summer theatrical release.
Newlyweeds
Phase 4 is planning a day and date theatrical and VOD release for the movie this summer.
Inequality For All
RADiUS and The Weinstein Company plan to release the Jacob Kornbluth-directed film in summer 2013.
Prince Avalanche
Magnolia is looking to release David Gordon Green‘s latest sometime this summer.
Blackfish
Magnolia is planning a summer theatrical release for the documentary, followed by a domestic broadcast premiere on CNN later in 2013.
The Way, Way Back
Fox Searchlight will release the Jim Rash- and Nate Faxon-penned and directed film sometime this summer.
Austenland
Sony Pictures Classics will release the film in the summer, after Sony Worldwide picked up the rights for the film at the festival.
The Spectacular Now
A24 will release the Miles Teller- and Shailene Woodley-starring winning film this summer.
Twenty Feet From Stardom
RADiUS and The Weinstein Company will release the doc later in the summer.
Fall 2013 Releases
Lovelace
RADiUS and The Weinstein Company have slated the Linda Lovelace biopic for a fall 2013 release.
Other 2013 Releases
Narco Cultura
The film was picked up by Cinedigm, who are planning both a theatrical release and awards qualifying run for the film sometime in 2013.
99% The Occupy Wall St. Collaborative Film
Participant Media grabbed this doc, and have already promised that, following its theatrical run, the film will have its world television premiere on Participant’s new TV channel, which is scheduled to launch in August.
Cutie and The Boxer
RADiUS and The Weinstein Company has slated a 2013 release for this audience favorite.
Before Midnight
Sony Pictures Classics picked up the final film in Richard Linklater‘s trilogy, and while no date has been set yet, this one is a guaranteed 2013 release.
Toy’s House
CBS Films is eying a 2013 release date for the very fun coming-of-age and living-in-the-woods teen comedy.
Fruitvale
The Weinstein Company picked up the Sundance champ early in the festival, and we’d be crazy to think they’re not going to give this one an awards season push.
The East
Fox Searchlight will release the new Zal Batmanglij and Brit Marling feature sometime this year.

Kill Your Darlings
Sony Pictures Classics picked this one up, but with no release date set, we all must hunger for seeing Daniel Radcliffe in a non-Harry Potter role ASAP. Date this sucker!
Mother of George
Oscilloscope Laboratories grabbed the picture, though there is no word on release plans as of yet.
Ain’t Them Bodies Saints
IFC Films picked up the rights to the fest favorite, but though they have yet to announce release plans, this will likely hit screens around awards time, thanks to the strength of its lead performances.
Breathe In
QED International picked up Drake Doremus’ latest, but there is still no word on when it will be released.
Milkshake
Phase 4 Films was brought to the yard by this one, but hasn’t announced a release date yet.
S-VHS
Magnolia Pictures grabbed the rights to the sequel to their popular V/H/S.
Two Mothers
Exclusive Releasing will give the Naomi Watts- and Robin Wright-starring “Motherlover” spin a theatrical release on an undetermined date.
We Are What We Are
eOne is planning a platform theatrical release for the English-language remake of the popular cannibal family drama.
Who is Dayani Cristal?
New distributor Mundial grabbed this one as part of their inaugural slate.
Pussy Riot – A Punk Prayer
HBO Documentary Films acquired U.S. television rights to the doc at the fest, with an air date yet to be announced.
Dirty Wars
Sundance Selects picked this one up early, but no word on release schedule or plan as of yet.
The Summit
Sundance Selects also bought the North American rights to this doc at the festival.
The Machine Which Makes Everything Disappear
Icarus Films now owns the rights to the doc, with no news on its planned release.
The Rambler
Anchor Bay brokered an agreement that covers theatrical, home entertainment, television, and digital distribution rights for Calvin Reeder‘s newest.
The Look of Love
IFC Films picked up the new Michael Winterbottom at the festival, though they’ve yet to pick a release date.
