Lush backdrops, soft-focus lighting, soothing tabla drum-based music and a half-naked Sherlyn Chopra are the selling points of this teaser trailer for Kamasutra 3D. The project comes from director Rupesh Paul (Saint Dracula 3D), who announced at Cannes last year that he wanted to make an epic based on the classic Indian sex manual written by Vātsyāyana, and it would appear as if he’s making that a reality.
According to the official synopsis, the movie is about “a young and beautiful Indian princess (Chopra), who sets out on a voyage in search of her husband whom she got married to as a child. Amidst the extravaganzas of the most luxurious ship in the world, she goes through the most personal and transformative changes of body, mind and soul. An enigmatic fellow passenger — the god of good looks and the ‘Kamasutra’ master- introduces her to the forbidden world of sexual love and sensuality.”
Obviously there’s a fine line between epic filmmaking and Red Shoe Dairies with a plot like that, and it probably hurts the genuine appeal to use an actress like Chopra who caused waves in her home country for being the first Indian woman to pose nude in Playboy (and, you know, the historical accuracy of silicone). But even if Paul is a sensationalist — he’s also claiming he wants a Hollywood star for the sequel, which will be in gimmicky 4D — there’s hope that Kamasutra is taken more seriously and less soft-core.

Maybe that part about the film being a celebration of a century of Indian cinema will ensure a true epic and not merely an excuse for erotica.
Kamasutra 3D is currently eying a release in India for May 16th and securing other international distribution.
