What exactly is this new movie Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges are starring in, called R.I.P.D.? In one respect it’s a comic book movie, seeing as it was adapted from a Peter M. Lenkov graphic novel. In another it’s your typical buddy cop movie, seeing as it teams the new guy on a police force up with the grizzled veteran and sends them out on a case.
When you watch this new trailer for the film, you can make connections between it and Men in Black, Ghostbusters, or heck.. even Robocop, so any way you slice it, it sounds like a genre fan’s dream come true. That’s in concept though, in execution things tend not to be so cut and dry, so you’re probably going to have to hit the jump and check out the trailer for yourself.
Well, what do you think? It’s true that Reynolds doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to making comic book movies, but he seems to be playing a pretty generic straight man here, which is hard to mess up, and it’s always a treat to watch Bridges play some sort of rough-rode old cowboy. Plus, it’s clear that R.I.P.D. is going to be packed full of action, both fantasy-based and otherwise. Whether that action will be big and fun, or too cartoony to take seriously seems to still be in question though. And while the banter we get from Mary-Louise Parker’s character proves that this is a movie that isn’t going to take itself too seriously, that can be a slippery slope as well. There’s nothing worse than a movie that keeps trying to be funny and doesn’t really pull it off.
Given all of these questions about the quality of the writing, it may be comforting to know that R.I.P.D. still has a couple of tricks up its sleeve. Those tricks being it’s director, Robert Schwentke, and an actor that this trailer doesn’t give us a glimpse of, Kevin Bacon. Schwentke already proved that he can pull off a fun action movie with Red, and Kevin Bacon, well…he’s Kevin Bacon. Chances are this one will be worth at least the price of a movie ticket.
