Oliver Stone’s adaptation of the oppressively hip Don Winslow novel Savages’ has been making a lot of waves on FSR today. First we showed you the teaser for the film, something like the trailer for the trailer (a new marketing trend that could get hilariously annoying if it becomes more pervasive), and now we’ve got the the full length trailer for the film; which adds some actual plot description to the loud noises and sexy imagery of the teaser.
The gist of the story is that Blake Lively, Taylor Kitsch, and Emile Hirsch play a trio of hip, young west coasters who think they’re going to revolutionize the drug trade by combining the rather potent strain of cannabis they’ve been growing with a new, copacetic, business-like approach to slinging weed. Unfortunately, some Mexican cartel types played by Salma Hayek and Benicio Del Toro have other plans for the idealistic youngsters, and some good, old-fashioned drug trade violence commences; violence involving things getting rocket launched.
It all adds up to a movie that would look right at home sitting on a shelf next to all of the Pulp Fiction rip-off films of the mid to late 90s. But since it’s directed by Oliver Stone, you know it will be a little bit more manic and crazy than 2 Days in the Valley and Things to Do in Denver When You’re Dead. And because of it’s Mexican flavor you’ll get Hayek being all fiery and Latina-hot, Del Toro stroking his creepy mustache, and killers wearing wicked-looking Lucha Libre masks. Oh yeah, and John Travolta gets stabbed.
Is such a stabbing worth the price of admission alone, or do you think this will just be another in a long line of Oliver Stone disappointments?
