What is Movie News After Dark? It’s a nightly collection of links and thinks from around the world of movie and television news and reviews. It spends its weekends racking its brain trying to cull together the strength to go forth with its usual Monday entry, knowing full well that it can’t spend all of its page space on Mad Men and Game of Thrones. This is a movie website, after all.
We begin this evening with a shot from Rush, the racing movie about Formula 1 driver James Hunt starring Chris Hemsworth and Olivia Wilde. Director Ron Howard and his leading lady have been tweeting them like crazy. Including pics of Hemsworth and Wilde getting married as Hunt and his wife, model Suzy Miller. I chose the one above to highlight because it’s badass.
Over at The Underwire, David Barr Kirtley walks us through 6 Weak Tweaks and a Dark Surprise from this weekend’s Game of Thrones episode, pointing out something about Yoren’s prisoners that I had not yet noticed myself. Side note: are you reading along with my Blog of Thrones? This week I talked about sexual politics. Juicy.
When Apple announced that movies would be available in the Cloud, there were two holdouts. Thanks to licensing agreements with HBO, Universal and Fox would have to leave their catalogs out of the future of movie storage. HBO said last month that they’d consider loosening the reigns on such agreements, and now Universal movies are available on iCloud. Fox is likely coming soon.
With less than two days to go, the folks at Old Murder House Theatre — whose Kickstarter campaign we featured previously — have just hit their goal and will now move on to the part where they must put on a show that lives up to their awesome preview video for Jurrasic Farce. Clever girls.
As you know, I love me some alternative movie posters. But if I mention Mondo two entries in a row, Robert Fure may become violent. So we’re going to artist Rowan Stocks Moore, who has delivered a series of alternative Disney posters for films like 101 Dalmations, Snow White and Bambi. His design for The Lion King is incredible:
This one’s going to be a stretch on the “movies” theme of this website, but it’s worth talking about. Facebook bought Instagram today for $1 billion dollars. That’s more than Titanic has made at the box office. Also, it paved the way for noted film nerd Christina Warren to write a lovely op-ed at Mashable entitled Dear Facebook, Please Don’t Ruin Instagram. It’s worth a read, if you are worried that Mark Zuckerberg is going to get in the way of your artsy cat photos.
“Given that every Batman film has been rated PG-13 since 1989—when Tim Burton’s version helped establish PG-13 as the most desirable rating for all would-be blockbusters—it is probably not surprising to learn that The Dark Knight Rises will also be PG-13.” This astute observation comes from Sean O’Neal at The AV Club. The MPAA did cite “some sensuality,” however. That’s something to look forward to.
Today’s best title in entertainment journalism goes to Gawker, who writes The Jennifer Love Hewitt Hanjob Hour Is the Funniest New Show on TV. This is not going to end well. My thoughts: where are all the schlubby guys looking for “extras” in that promo?
Today in random lists I dug up because Mondays are boring and you deserve something great, Joanna Robinson at Pajiba presents 115 Reasons Why We Love Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She seems to have gotten every single one of them. She’s talented and frighteningly thorough like that.
Eric D. Snider’s The 2012 Hunger Games is funnier than most things you’ve read today. Okay, it’s funnier than everything else you’ve read today.
FILM CRIT HULK takes on John Carter. More specifically, he/it takes on the John Carter script. Does anyone know of a program that will take something written in all-caps and make it readable?
We close tonight with a 9-minute first episode of the Battleship Pretension video podcast. After inspection, we’ve decided that this may be the best movie-related video podcast out there. Sure, the Harry Knowles muppet (and the character designed by the Jim Henson Co.) may have a bigger following and more money behind it, but these Pretension guys are doing incredibly well for their first foray into the second dimension. You should honor them with your patronage.
