The Best Movie Trailers of 2012

Everyone knows you can’t judge a book by its cover, but were you aware that movies shouldn’t be judged by a trailer either? I know, seems counter-intuitive, but while the trailer advertises a feature the two aren’t interchangeable. Terrible trailers sometimes give way to fantastic films just as brilliant trailers sometimes reveal ridiculously bad ones.

It’s a crap shoot really.

The list below features twelve of our favorite trailers that premiered in 2012. Some of the movies turned out to be gems, others ended up being far less impressive and a few won’t be released until 2013, but all of them made us excited to watch one more movie…

Antiviral

Taking into account this is Brandon Cronenberg‘s first movie, using the ‘ol “from the mind of” tagline was a tad silly. But the more footage we saw, the more it made sense. The Antiviral trailer has his father’s DNA all over it. Just compare the trailer for this and Cosmopolis, and the connection is clear. Both trailers feel like excerpts from some horrible nightmares. – Jack Giroux

The Bourne Legacy

Before most fans were disappointed by this Bourne reboot, they all got hot and bothered by the film’s atmospheric teaser. There was that thumping score, a beat up Jeremy Renner, and the proof that only Edward Norton can make the line, “Jason Bourne was the tip of the iceberg,” work. I was a fan of the movie, but not as much as I was of this teaser. - JG

Cloud Atlas (extended)

It’s fitting that the first trailer for Cloud Atlas was a near-six minute showcase of the characters, worlds and ideas that made up David Mitchell‘s beloved novel and the adaptation by Tom Tykwer and the Wachowskis. The music is as impressive as the visuals with elements from the film’s score and soaring track by M83, and the entire thing hints at a grand, sweeping adventure. – Rob Hunter

Cosmopolis (teaser)

This was the first time any logical person could say, “Maybe we should start taking this Robert Pattinson guy seriously.” The 40 second Cosmopolis teaser showed Pattison was reaching for something new and possibly impressive, and where better to do so than with some bizarre, cryptic imagery only David Cronenberg could conjure up. - JG
